What TREC sees and how it decides
TREC's fingerprint check returns reported arrests and outcomes, and its fitness review weighs the offense type, recency, and rehabilitation. Fraud, theft, and other moral-turpitude offenses draw the most scrutiny; a single old dismissed case is rarely fatal but always visible until removed.
TREC offers a Fitness Determination you can request before spending on courses — worth doing if your record is complicated. Better still: an expunged record doesn't appear at all, and after expunction you may lawfully deny the arrest on the application.
Sealed vs. expunged for licensure
Occupational licensing agencies are frequently within the statutory exceptions that can access sealed records, so nondisclosure helps most with clients, brokerages, and the public — while expunction removes the record from the licensing check itself. For dismissed or never-charged cases, expunge before you apply.
